Scaling and root planing also known as a deep cleaning is the careful cleaning of the root surfaces to remove plaque and calculus [tartar] from below the gums and in deep periodontal pockets and to smooth the tooth root to remove bacterial toxins and build-ups. Scaling and root planing is sometimes done in conjunction with by adjunctive therapy such as local delivery antimicrobials or localized laser pocket disinfecting as needed on a case-by-case basis.
Quite often, following scaling and root planing, many patients do not require any further active treatment or surgery. However, the majority of patients will require ongoing maintenance therapy to sustain health and each patient will be given a personalize maintenance schedule best fitting their oral health needs.
